Sportswriters commonly say that no professional sports team means more to their fans than the Green Bay Packers.
Today, while covering Donald Driver’s retirement ceremony at Lambeau Field, I was struck by the emotion from Driver, his coaches, teammates and, most of all, his fans.
Over a thousand fans waited over an hour in sub-zero weather just to get a chance to see him announce his retirement. Many people in the audience teared up at various points during the ceremony, which was something I definitely didn’t expect. The emotion of the fans led to one of my favorite photos of the day, when Driver walked along the rope line to greet his fans. I thought their expression while they embraced him was truly genuine.
