When I was assigned the NFL draft party at Lambeau, I got excited to get creative. Sometimes events where there are lots of people pumped about one particular thing can lead to some nice candid moments. But, as is often common, what I imagined the NFL draft party to be and what it was were entirely different things. First off, I thought there would be a line of people lining up to get inside (which sounds boring, but they would have been lining up at 6pm, when the light is nice. Anything is exciting when the light is nice). Also, there just weren’t that many people and they weren’t that excited. Boo.
But I tried to be creative nonetheless…I played with some lighting, colors, contrast, layers…you know, the regular bag of photojournalist tricks. Made me feel better just to shoot the assignment a little differently than how I’ve been approaching assignments recently—and for an event that could essentially be renamed: “Dozens of sports fans gather to stare at television for 6 hours,” I’m reasonably happy with how things turned out.
Enjoy! And thanks for looking, as always.
